Aarne Ervi and Viljo Revell guided tour in Helsinki capital region

Monday 6th August (afternoon) and Saturday 11th August (morning)

Departure and return: Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Mannerheiminaukio 2, Helsinki, the tourist bus stop in front of the museum. The tour starts at 13.00 (Monday) or at 9.00 (Saturday) and ends correspondingly by 17.30 or by 13.30, total duration 4,5 hours.

Price: 35 € /person includes bus transportation, guidance, coffee and sandwich.

Aarne Ervi (1910-77) and Viljo Revell (1910-64) were the most prominent Finnish architects of their generation during the two decades following the Second World War. Revell's Toronto City Hall (1965) is one of the landmarks of the international style. Ervi's Porthania building (1957) for the University of Helsinki is one of the icons of Finnish modernism. Prime examples of their designs are located in Helsinki and its surroundings.

Half-day tour to selected buildings is organized by the Museum of Finnish Architecture with the Didrichsen Art Museum.

DOCOMOMO - sites in Helsinki

Monday 6th August and Saturday 11th August

Departure and return: The Lasipalatsi Film and Media Centre, Mannerheimintie 22-24, Helsinki, the main entrance. The excursion starts at 9.00 and ends by 17.30, total duration 8,5 hours.

Price: 50 € /person includes bus transportation, guidance and lunch.


During the full day excursion we will see modern architecture in Helsinki dating from the 1930s' to the 1960s'. These buildings and neighbourhoods - public buildings, office houses, schools and residential areas - are all included in the Finnish docomomo selection. Visits will be organized for such buildings as Porthania university building (Aarne Ervi 1950-57) and Helsinki City Theatre (Timo Penttilä 1959-67) as well as residential areas Olympic village and Kisakylä-area (Hilding Ekelund, Martti Välikangas 1939-40; Pauli Salomaa 1952). One sight will be Malmi airport (Dag Englund 1935-38), where we will also have lunch.

Modern Masterpieces of Vantaa

Saturday 11th August

Departure and return: Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Mannerheiminaukio 2, Helsinki, the tourist bus stop in front of the museum. The excursion starts at 9.30 and ends by 13.00, total duration 3,5 hours.

Price: 31 €/person includes buffet lunch, bus transportation and guidance.

During the excursion we will see Kaivoksela suburb (1961-67, town plan by professor Olli Kivinen, buildings architect Aarne Ehojoki) and Aerola row houses (1953-55, architect Alvar Aalto). The tour also visits Simonkylä suburb (1965-68, town plan by architect Pentti Riihelä and architecture student Esa Ollikainen, buildings by architect Sulo Savolainen) and Futuro gas station on Vanamotie street (1970, architect Matti Suuronen). The final tour destination is the Finnish Science Center Heureka (1989, architects Mikko Heikkinen and Markku Komonen), where we will also have lunch.

Vyborg and Sunila

Saturday 11th August - Sunday 12th August

Departure and return: Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Mannerheiminaukio 2, Helsinki, the tourist bus stop in front of the museum. The excursion starts on Saturday at 8.00 am and ends by Sunday 8.00 pm, total duration 2 days.

Price: 325 €/person in single room, 270 €/person in double room, Hotel Vyborg. The prices include bus transportation, guidance, accomodation for one night, two lunches and breakfasts.

NB! Hotel Letuchaya Mysh has been cancelled due to unexpected reasons.

During the two days excursion we will see Alvar Aalto Library in Vyborg, Russia built in 1933-35. The library is incsribed in the Russian Federation´s list of Objects of Historical and Cultural Heritage. The ISC-Technology will organise the annual meeting in Vyborg.

Sunila industrial site with pulp factory and housing areas in Kotka will be visited on Sunday. The site was built.built in several stages from 1930´s to 1950´s. Sunila site is included in the Finnish docomomo selection. The excursion starts Saturday 11th August at 8 am and arrives in Vyborg at noon. Overnight in Vyborg. On Sunday 12th August a short visit by bus round the city. To Sunila we will arrive at 13.30 and we'll be back in Helsinki at 8 pm.

Important: citizens of most countries must request a visa from within their country of origin before entering Russia.


South-Western Finland

Helsinki - Paimio - Turku - Noormarkku - Tampere - Helsinki

Sunday 12th August - Monday 13th August

Departure and return: Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Mannerheiminaukio 2, Helsinki, the tourist bus stop in front of the museum. The excursion starts on Sunday at 8.00 am and ends by Monday 8.00 pm, total duration 2 days.

Price: 237 €/person in single room, 222 €/person in double room includes bus transportation, guidance, accomodation for one night, two lunches and breakfasts.

The tour visits some most important 1930s buildings by Alvar Aalto and Erik Bryggman. On the first day we will see Paimio Sanatorium (1928-33), Resurrection Chapel (1938-41) as well as Pekka Pitkänen's Chapel of the Holy Cross (1965-67). Overnight will be in Turku where we will see examples of Finnish docomomo selection. On Monday the tour continues first to Villa Mairea (1938-39) in Noormarkku. In Tampere it includes Reima Pietilä's 1960s and 1980s works such as Kaleva Church and Metso Tampere City Library. In addition to docomomo sites and buildings the tour offers views to older Finnish cultural heritage.

Tallinn

Saturday 11th August

Departure and return: West Terminal, Länsiterminaali L4, Tyynenmerenkatu 8, Helsinki

The shuttle boat leaves Helsinki at 7.30 am. and arrives Tallinn at 9.30 am. The return boat from Tallinn leaves at 7.30 pm. and arrives Helsinki at 9.30 pm. Total duration 14 hours. Required time limit for arriving at the check-in is 30 minutes prior to departure at the latest.

The tour offers a selection of the highlights of 20th century architectural heritage in Tallinn. The first half is dedicated to the pre-war buildings. The tour introduces the industrial past of Tallinn and visits the seaplane hangars (1916-17, designed by Christiani & Nielsen ) famous for its unique thin concrete shell construction. We will also take a glance at some better examples of modern dwellings of 1920-30ies. After lunch Soviet heritage is in focus. We will visit the Tallinn Song Stage (1959) and buildings erected for 1980 Summer Olympics - the concert/sports venue Linnahall and the Tallinn Olympic Yachting Centre. For the last two hours there is a choice between various walking tours in the city centre or spending time in the Museum of Estonian Architecture.

Price: 85 €/person includes boat trips Helsinki-Tallinn-Helsinki, bus transfers and guidance in Tallinn, lunch, snacks in the bus and a coffee break in Tallinn.


Deadlines and cancellation policy

Please note that the deadline for registering to all excursions except Vyborg and Sunila is May 31, 2012. The registration deadline for Vyborg and Sunila excursion is 30 April, 2012. If a cancellation for an excursion is received by 31 May 2012, Vyborg and Sunila by 30 April, 2012, the registration fee will be refunded with the exception of a handling fee of 20 €.

No refunds can be made for cancellations received after 31 May 2012, Vyborg and Sunila after 30 April 2012.

Alvar Aalto walking and tram tour in Helsinki

Monday 6th August (afternoon)

Departure : Academic Bookshop, meeting at the front door, Esplanade street. The tour starts at 2 pm and ends at 5 pm, total duration 3 hours.

The tour visits Academic Bookshop, "Iron house" courtyard, Finlandia and National Pensions´ institute where the tour ends around 5 pm.

Minimum number of participants required 10, maximum 20.

Alvar Aalto walking

Saturday 11th August (morning)

The tour visits Academic Bookshop, "Iron House" interiors, and Savoy restaurant (option to stay for coffee/ drink or lunch) where the tour ends around 12.30.

Otaniemi

Monday 6th August, Tuesday 7th August and Wednesday 8th August (afternoon)

Departure: Otaniemi Technical University, main library. The tour starts at 2.30 pm and ends at 5 pm, total duration 2,5 hours.

The tour visits Main Library of the Otaniemi Technical University, Central Building of the University and Faculty of Architecture, all by Alvar Aalto. We will also see Dipoli Student Union building by Reima and Raili Pietilä and Chapel by Heikki and Kaija Siren.


KONE's Espoo office reference visit

Tuesday 7th August (afternoon)

Departure and return: Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Mannerheiminaukio 2, Helsinki, the tourist bus stop in front of the museum. The bus leaves from Kiasma at 14.30, stops at Hotel Tapiola Garden at 14.45 and arrives to KONE by 15.00. The bus leaves from KONE at 16.30, drives back the same route as on arrival and returns to Kiasma by 17.00. Total duration of the excursion 2,5 hours, the visit at KONE 1,5 hours.

A reference visit to KONE Building at Espoo's Keilasatama between 15.00 and 16.30. This unique office building was designed by Antti-Matti Siikala from SARC architects. As KONE is one of the Docomomo Finland 2012 conference sponsors, Docomomo participants are offered an opportunity to participate in this reference visit. The visit will consist of visiting the building and presentations by Anne Stenros (VP, Design, KONE) and by Antti-Matti Siikala (SARC architects), and a short discussion with the presenters.
